Quoting from Gunaratne’s ‘Road to Nandikadal’, Samaraweera described how soldiers had committed violence against unarmed civilians.
Gunaratne wrote that he admitted having gained satisfaction by seeing how a group of soldiers proceeding from Jaffna Central College to the heart of the town had taken revenge over their dead colleague by destroying private property and acting unlawfully.
Looking back, Gunaratne wrote further that he was ashamed that no one had taken immediate steps regarding the soldiers’ having set fire to houses and private property.
Samaraweera said that Gunaratne had watched what had happened and was now saying that he felt ashamed.
He told journalists that it has to be admitted that what the military officer has exposed had actually taken place.
Reports say copies of the book’s pages which describe war crimes are being distributed by Tamil diaspora groups in Europe.
