SLFP Faces Fresh Division, MR Looks To Take Advantage


The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is facing a fresh division and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is attempting to make full use of it, sources said.

At least 19 SLFP members have now indicated they may leave the government by September if the SLFP continues with its agreement with the United National Party (UNP).

The two year agreement between the UNP and SLFP in the unity government ends next month but indications are it will be extended.

SLFP members who are dejected have warned that they will sit independently in Parliament if the UNP-SLFP agreement is extended.

Meanwhile, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has initiated talks with the SLFP members looking to leave the government as well as with some UNP members, sources said.
