2 Navy chiefs to be charged over youth disappearances

Former Navy commander Wasantha Karannagoda and incumbent Ravi Wijegunaratne are likely to be charged over the abduction and enforced disappearance of 11 Tamils youths in 2008. They are to be charged with abduction, illegal detention, extortion and murder. Two pieces of evidence point to Karannagoda having been aware about this crime.

Meanwhile, the CID, attorney general’s department and the Colombo Fort magistrate are reportedly under pressure by various parties to grant bail to ex-Navy spokesman D.K.P. Dassanayake, who was arrested yesterday over this incident. Some have made direct influences, while other indirectly, including certain persons in the media ministry without the knowledge of minister Mangala Samaraweera. This despicable attempt against law enforcement should be ended. Or else, Lanka News Web will reveal identifies of the guilty parties.
