Namal, others remanded until 16th!

MP Namal Rajapaksa and several others were arrested at the Hambantota police yesterday (10), after giving statements in connection with the protest four days ago against the long-term leasing of Mattala airport to India.

They were produced before Hambantota magistrate Manjula Karunaratne around 10.00 pm and were ordered remanded until October 16.

The others include MPs D.V. Chanaka, Prasanna Ranaweera and provincial councilors Upali Kodikara, Sampath Athukorale and Maj. Ajith Prasanna.

They were arrested on charges of illegal assembly, causing damage to public property, blocking the duty of police and causing injury to them and violating a court order.

As they were being taken to Tangalle prison, tyres were burnt on the road, temporarily disrupting vehicular movements.
