Senior minister's brother used by Hayleys Group

Hayleys Advantis, the shipping arm of the Hayleys Group headed by casino businessman Dhammika Perera, is currently using the influence wielded by one of its directors to meet government ministers to lobby against Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera's 2018 budget proposal to liberalize the country's shipping and logistics sector.


The respective director, who heads the chain of hotels under the Hayleys Group, is the brother of senior UNP minister, Malik Samarawickrema.

Hayleys is currently using its political influence as well as finances to muster the support to prevent the liberalization from taking place.

Head of Hayleys, Mohan Pandithage it is learnt is using his school ties to lobby with ministers from his alma mater. Pandithage is an old Anandian.

The local shipping monopoly has already lobbied with Ministers Arjuna Ranatunge and Mahinda Samarasinghe
