The final 3rd T 20 encounter between the touring Sri Lanka and South Africa was played on Wednesday night at Newlands , town with the series level at 1-1 in front of a capacity crowd. South African skipper Behardien won the toss and did not hesitate to take the first lease on a good track.
The world renowned batsmen AB de Villiers’ who returned to the side after a long injury layoff after six months top scored with 63including 2 fours and 3 sixes .South Africa made 169 runs for the 5 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.
Niroshan Dickwella and Upul Tharanga both left handed batsman opened added 35 runs in 4.1 overs before Tharanga mistimed a drive and was caught within the 30 yard circle for 20 runs compiled in 11 balls which included 4 fours.
Niroshan Dickwella continued in a positive vein initially partnering Dhananjaya de Silva and later with Sekkuge Prasanna.Dickwella scored a flamboyant career best 68 overshadowing AB de Villiers’63 runs . He scored 10 fours and a six in his 51 ball knock After the demise of Dickwella it was Sekkuge Prasanna who helped Sri Lanka to achieve the target with an exhilarating unbeaten 37 runs which included 3 fours and 3 sixes in 16 balls.Sri Lanka achieved the target in 19.5 overs Spinner Imran Tahir captured three wickets
In the end, South Africa might blame their middle-order problems for not posting a big enough total. They lost 4 for 28 runs in 25 balls between the 14th and 18th over, including de Villiers which may have been the difference.
Sri Lanka with the victory and series win by 2-1 was able to redeem all lost pride after losing the Tests 3-0.This was the second highest successful run chase made at the Newlands, Cape Town and the highest winning run chase by Sri Lanka in T 20 internationals.
Niroshan Dickwella was adjudicated as the :” Player of the Match” as well as the ‘Player of the series ‘ for scoring over 130 runs in the three ODI’s received two magnificent trophies..Dinesh Chandimal was presented with the winning trophy at the presentation.
