August 26, Colombo (LNW): As legal proceedings continue at the Fort Magistrate’s Court against former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, a large crowd of United National Party (UNP) supporters and activists gathered outside the court premises today, staging a vocal protest against the current administration.
Wickremesinghe, who is presently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital whilst under remand, is facing charges relating to the alleged misuse of public funds. He was taken into custody on August 22 by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and later remanded over accusations of undertaking a personal visit abroad under the guise of official state duties.
Whilst the case is being actively heard inside the courtroom, tensions have flared outside. Demonstrators have directed their protest at President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, displaying placards with slogans such as “AKD GO Gama”, drawing parallels with past political movements and expressing frustration over what they allege is a politically motivated case.
Court proceedings are ongoing, with the defence arguing for bail on medical grounds due to Wickremesinghe’s critical health condition, while the Attorney General’s Department maintains that the charges are serious and merit continued judicial custody.
Security around the court remains tight, as both the legal and political dimensions of the case continue to unfold.
