Malaysia  to set up a training centre for SL youth to provide  jobs

Date:

The Malaysian Foreign Employment Ministry and Sri Lanka Labour Ministry have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Malaysia on the speedy establishment of a specialized training centre targeting jobs in Malaysia.

The above details were disclosed after a special meeting held between labour Minister Manusha Nanayakkara and the High Commissioner of Malaysia to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, Tan Yang Thai, at the Ministry.

In 2016, when Minister Nanayakkara was the Deputy Minister of Foreign Employment, an MoU was signed between the two countries to establish a Malaysian Training Centre.

During the discussion, the Minister and the High Commissioner agreed to reconsider the agreement and take steps to set up a training centre in due course.

The Minister requested the High Commissioner to create for more job opportunities for Sri Lankan workers once Malaysia opened its doors to migrant workers after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The attention was drawn to sending more workers, especially for jobs in the manufacturing sector, and to providing them with specialized training through the Malaysian Training Centre, which they hope to start.

The Malaysian High Commissioner also informed the Minister that a minimum wage has been introduced for Malaysian workers and that the minimum wage could be included in the employment contracts of Sri Lankan migrant workers
