July 09, Colombo (LNW): The government has formally reinstated the Old Bogambara Prison as an official correctional facility through an Extraordinary Gazette issued by Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara.

The Gazette notification confirms that the Minister has exercised the powers granted under Section 2 of the Prisons Ordinance (Chapter 54) to designate the historic Bogambara prison premises as a prison under the law.

As a result of the declaration, the site will now legally operate as a recognised prison in accordance with the provisions of the Prisons Ordinance, enabling authorities to use the facility for correctional purposes.

The move provides the legal framework required for the premises to resume its role within Sri Lanka’s prison system and comes as prison authorities continue efforts to manage inmate accommodation across the country.

The designation has been made under the statutory powers vested in the Minister by Section 2 of the Prisons Ordinance, making the order effective through the publication of the Gazette notification.
