July 13, Colombo (LNW): The Government is evaluating proposals from several professional groups seeking an increase in the mandatory retirement age, Health and Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa has said.
Speaking to journalists after attending the inauguration of a newly established kidney stone treatment unit at Mirigama Hospital on Saturday, the Minister confirmed that a number of appeals had been submitted by professionals who believe they are able to continue serving beyond the current retirement age.
Dr. Jayatissa said the requests have come from a wide cross-section of the public sector, including members of the judiciary serving in the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and High Courts. He added that healthcare professionals and officers attached to the Department of Prisons have also sought an extension, citing the value of retaining experienced personnel in essential public services.
According to the Minister, several applicants have argued that they remain physically and professionally capable of carrying out their responsibilities and that extending the retirement age would help preserve institutional knowledge while easing shortages in specialised fields.
He acknowledged that opinions on the issue differ, with some advocating greater opportunities for younger employees entering the workforce. Nevertheless, Dr. Jayatissa said the Government is examining all submissions before reaching a final decision, adding that any policy change would be made only after a comprehensive assessment of the implications for the public service and the country’s long-term workforce requirements.
