August 06, Colombo (LNW): The Ministry of Defence has announced that tri-forces personnel have been placed on standby to support disaster response operations in the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts as adverse weather continues to affect several parts of the country.
According to the Ministry, the precautionary deployment has been coordinated in close collaboration with the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) to ensure a swift response to any emergencies arising from heavy rain, flooding or landslides.
Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara said authorities are paying particular attention to low-lying areas and locations vulnerable to landslides, with Ulapane, Gampola, Nawalapitiya and Peradeniya identified among the areas facing heightened risk.
He called on residents to remain alert, closely follow official weather advisories and take all necessary precautions while the unfavourable weather conditions persist.
The public has also been reminded to immediately report any emergency situations to the Disaster Management Centre by contacting its 117 emergency hotline, enabling authorities to respond without delay.
