August 16, Colombo (LNW): Drug screening carried out among bus drivers and conductors has revealed that nearly one in ten people tested had used drugs, according to the National Transport Medical Institute.

Institute Chairman Professor Clifford Perera said the testing programme had so far covered public transport personnel in the Western, Southern, North Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, with the results raising concerns over safety on the country’s roads.

The findings have prompted authorities to continue screening drivers and other transport workers suspected of reporting for duty after consuming drugs.

Perera said the testing programme remains underway, with further checks expected to be conducted as authorities seek to identify individuals who may pose a danger to passengers and other road users by operating vehicles while under the influence of narcotics.

The authorities are also expected to expand monitoring as part of broader efforts to strengthen road safety and ensure that drivers entrusted with the lives of passengers are medically fit to perform their duties.
