August 16, Colombo (LNW): A group of Australian investors and business leaders has indicated a strong interest in establishing direct investment ventures in Sri Lanka, with manufacturing, agriculture and sustainable industries among the areas being considered.
The proposed investments are expected to support the Government’s efforts to expand the country’s manufacturing base, attract international capital and create new opportunities for technology-driven industries.
The investment prospects were discussed during a meeting held in Clyde North, Victoria, attended by a Sri Lankan delegation led by Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Handunnetti.
Among the key areas explored was the introduction of environmentally sustainable technologies to Sri Lanka’s apparel industry. Investors discussed potential projects involving renewable energy systems and modern recycling methods designed to reduce waste and improve the sector’s environmental performance.
The discussions also covered plans for a commercial-scale dairy operation capable of accommodating around 2,000 cattle. A separate livestock breeding initiative, incorporating measures to improve resilience against changing climate conditions, was also considered.
Another proposal involves establishing a major manufacturing facility specialising in 3D-printing technology and equipment made using recycled plastics. The project is expected to be centred around the Industrial Development Board’s Ekala Industrial Estate and could introduce new manufacturing capabilities to the local market.
The Australian business community also welcomed what it described as improving transparency and credibility within Sri Lanka’s investment environment, while acknowledging the Government’s efforts to provide greater support for businesses.
The latest discussions could pave the way for further engagement between Australian investors and Sri Lankan authorities as the country seeks to attract capital, technology and expertise into strategically important industries.
