August 17, Colombo (LNW): Grama Niladhari officers have suspended their trade union campaign after reaching an understanding with the Government following talks held on Monday with Public Administration Minister Professor Chandana Abeyratne and the ministry secretary.

Representatives of the unions said President Anura Kumara Dissanayake also participated in the discussions by telephone and gave an assurance that measures would be introduced through the forthcoming Budget to address the issues raised by the officers.

The unions said the assurances received during the discussions had prompted them to end the industrial action, which had disrupted the normal duties of Grama Niladhari officers.

Following the decision, officers are expected to return to their regular duties from today, with services to be carried out on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays as per the existing working arrangements.

Union representatives said they would closely monitor the Government’s progress in implementing the commitments made during the discussions, particularly the measures expected to be included in the upcoming Budget.
