September 21, Colombo (LNW): A total of 38 schools in several parts of Sri Lanka have been closed today (21) as authorities respond to the continuing adverse weather conditions affecting the country.
The Ministry of Education said decisions on whether schools should remain open or suspend classes have been placed in the hands of the relevant local education authorities, allowing them to respond according to conditions in their respective areas.
As of 9.00am today, 38 schools had been ordered to remain closed. The Central Province accounted for the overwhelming majority, with 35 schools affected.
One school each in the Sabaragamuwa, Southern and Western Provinces has also been closed due to the prevailing weather.
The Ministry said local authorities would continue to assess conditions and take appropriate decisions concerning school operations based on the situation on the ground.
