September 22, Colombo (LNW): Adverse weather conditions have disrupted the lives of more than 1,600 people across Sri Lanka, with authorities reporting damage to homes and infrastructure as heavy rain and strong winds continue to affect several parts of the country.
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said 1,616 people belonging to 458 families have been affected across 41 Divisional Secretariat Divisions in 10 districts.
The weather-related incidents recorded between 18 September and 6.00 a.m. on 22 September have so far resulted in one death, while another person has been reported missing, according to the DMC.
Strong winds also caused significant damage in the Galahitiyawa North Grama Niladhari Division on Monday night. Five houses were affected, while sections of the local electricity distribution network sustained extensive damage.
As conditions remain unsettled, 94 people from 26 families have been moved to three safety centres for their protection, the DMC said.
Authorities continue to monitor developments in affected areas, while emergency services and local officials remain on alert to assist communities should the weather situation worsen.
