The Government is targeting the completion and commissioning of six newly constructed oil storage tanks at the Kolonnawa Oil Storage Complex within one year, Minister of Ports, Aviation and Energy Anura Karunathilaka said.
The Minister made the remarks yesterday during an inspection tour of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) terminal in Kolonnawa, where he reviewed the progress of the ongoing tank construction project.
Construction of the six tanks began on September 17, 2025, under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Officials briefed the Minister that the project is currently 40–45% complete and is scheduled to be ready for operations by September 2027.
The project, estimated to cost Rs. 3.7 billion, is aimed at expanding Sri Lanka’s fuel storage capacity and strengthening the country’s energy security.
The six new tanks will provide a combined additional storage capacity of 64,000 cubic metres. This includes three tanks with a capacity of 15,000 cubic metres each, two tanks with a capacity of 7,000 cubic metres each and one tank with a capacity of 5,000 cubic metres.
The project also involves upgrading supporting infrastructure, including the oil recovery system, establishing new filling facility zones and constructing and rehabilitating oil pipelines using modern technology.
In addition, new facilities are planned for employees and officials, including a modern building for officers in charge and a separate engineering office building.
