September 28, Colombo (LNW): Water levels at a number of major reservoirs across Sri Lanka are showing signs of easing, with conditions gradually moving back towards normal, according to the Irrigation Department.
L.S. Sooriyabandara, Director of the department’s Water Resources and Disaster Management Engineering Division, said several rivers were still registering minor flood levels, although the overall trend was one of decline.
At Thalgahagoda, the Nilwala River remains above its normal range but is steadily falling. The Gin River has meanwhile returned to normal levels, while water around Baddegama continues to be classified as a minor flood situation and is also receding.
Similar conditions have been reported at Millakanda and Kuda Ganga, where river levels remain elevated but are gradually easing. Elsewhere, reservoirs monitored by the Irrigation Department are currently maintaining normal water levels.
Officials are also not expecting the rivers that remain above normal to develop into major flooding at this stage. The outlook is based partly on the Meteorological Department’s forecast for the 28th, which does not indicate any significant rainfall that could trigger a fresh rise in water levels.
Authorities will continue to monitor the situation as river and reservoir levels respond to changing weather conditions.
