October 01, Colombo (LNW): Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called for a rethink of state policy to keep pace with the rapid social changes taking place in Sri Lanka, stressing the need to protect both children and adults as society evolves.

In a message issued to mark World Children’s Day, Premadasa said changing social attitudes, lifestyles and expectations were creating new challenges that could not be addressed effectively through outdated policy approaches.

He said policymakers should take a broader view when developing national policies, paying closer attention to the differing needs of younger and older generations while ensuring that children are given the support necessary to navigate an increasingly complex future.

Premadasa also highlighted education as a crucial part of preparing the next generation. He said the education system should go beyond the traditional goal of producing responsible citizens and place greater emphasis on developing practical and professional skills.

According to the Opposition Leader, children need access to an education that equips them with knowledge, confidence and relevant skills to respond to changing economic and social conditions.

He further said the pace of change within society required policymakers to regularly reassess existing approaches and respond to emerging needs. State policy, he added, should remain closely connected to the realities experienced by people at different stages of their lives, particularly children who will inherit responsibility for the country’s future.
