October 04, Colombo (LNW): Four people have lost their lives in three separate road accidents reported in different parts of Sri Lanka within a 24-hour period, according to police.
In the first incident, a 47-year-old man died following a collision on the Habarana–Trincomalee Road in the Kithuluthuwa area.
Police said the crash occurred when a car travelling from Habarana towards Kantale collided with a three-wheeler approaching from the opposite direction. The three-wheeler driver and a passenger travelling in the rear were injured and rushed to Kantale Base Hospital. The driver later died while receiving treatment. He was identified as a resident of Agbopura.
A separate fatal crash was reported on Dharmapala Mawatha in Ampara, where a van travelling towards Kalmunai struck a three-wheeler travelling ahead.
The three-wheeler driver, two women and a young girl were injured in the collision and taken to Ampara District General Hospital. A 43-year-old woman from Udawalawe subsequently succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, two more deaths were reported following a collision between a motorcycle and a bus in the Diyagama area of Kalutara North.
The motorcycle, which was travelling in the opposite direction, collided with a bus heading from Horana towards Kalutara. Both the motorcyclist and his female passenger suffered critical injuries and were admitted to Galpatha Divisional Hospital.
Despite medical treatment, the pair later died in hospital. Police identified the victims as a 23-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl, both from the Galpatha area.
Police are continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding all three crashes.
