Government Appoints Committee to Review Prison Regulations Following Talks with Maha Sangha

A special committee has been appointed on the instructions of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to review and update the rules, regulations and standing orders established under the Prisons Ordinance.

The appointment follows a special discussion between the President and Buddhist monks representing the three Nikayas.

The five-member committee comprises Ministry of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Secretary Prince Senadheera, Ministry of Justice and National Integration Additional Secretary Piyumanthi Peiris, Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Additional Secretary Wasantha Ariyarathna, Commissioner-General of Buddhist Affairs R.M.G. Senarathna, and Department of Prisons Commissioner A.C. Gajanayake.

The committee has been tasked with periodically reviewing existing prison regulations and standing orders to ensure they reflect current religious, cultural, legal, administrative and practical requirements.

It will identify necessary amendments aimed at improving efficiency, strengthening good governance and security, preserving cultural values, and upholding the rule of law within the prison system.

The committee is expected to submit its recommendations following the review.
