Islandwide Power Outage to Face Formal Investigation, Report Due Within a Month

October 18, Colombo (LNW): An official inquiry is to be launched into the widespread electricity failure that affected Sri Lanka yesterday (17), with authorities expected to receive a comprehensive report within one month.

Pradeep Priyadarshana, Chairman of National System Operator (Pvt) Ltd, confirmed that the incident would be examined as part of a formal investigation. The findings are to be submitted to the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka and the relevant Ministry within the designated timeframe.

The inquiry is expected to establish the circumstances that led to the sudden interruption of electricity supplies across the island and clarify the factors responsible for the disruption. Its findings will be important in determining whether technical faults or other operational issues contributed to the incident.

The investigation is also expected to provide the relevant authorities with information needed to assess the reliability of the country’s electricity transmission and distribution arrangements and identify any measures that may be required to reduce the risk of similar disruptions in the future.

The one-month deadline sets a clear timeframe for the submission of findings, although further details about the scope of the inquiry and any immediate corrective measures have yet to be announced.
