November 01, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka have been handed a financial penalty following their failure to maintain the required over-rate during Thursday’s ODI Tri-Series encounter against England in Lahore.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that the Sri Lankan team had fallen one over behind the stipulated bowling schedule, even after the permitted time allowances had been taken into account. As a result, the team was fined five per cent of its players’ match fees.
The disciplinary action was imposed by Jeff Crowe, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The regulation stipulates a five per cent deduction from players’ match fees for every over a team fails to complete within the allocated time.
Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis accepted responsibility on behalf of the side and pleaded guilty to the offence. He also agreed to the proposed punishment, meaning the matter was settled without the need for a formal disciplinary hearing.
The charge was brought by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, with third umpire Wayne Knights and fourth umpire Nassir Hussain also involved in the decision.
