Government Steps Up Efforts to Ensure Festive Season Supplies Remain Steady

November 01, Colombo (LNW): The Government has intensified preparations to ensure that essential commodities and other consumer goods remain readily available across Sri Lanka during the forthcoming festive period, Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe has said.

The Minister explained that discussions were under way with key stakeholders in the supply chain to avoid disruptions and prevent a shortage of goods as demand increases in the run-up to the celebrations.

Among those involved in the discussions are the Cooperative Wholesale Establishment (CWE), Sathosa, cooperative societies, importers’ associations operating in Pettah and domestic manufacturers. The aim is to strengthen distribution networks and ensure that sufficient stocks reach markets throughout the country.

Samarasinghe acknowledged that consumers might experience some changes in prices, pointing out that fluctuations in commodity markets were a feature of economies beyond Sri Lanka as well.

Nevertheless, he stressed that the authorities were working closely with suppliers and local producers to contain unnecessary price increases and maintain a steady flow of goods.

With household spending traditionally rising during festive periods, the Government is seeking to ensure that increased demand does not translate into widespread shortages or place additional pressure on consumers already grappling with the cost of living.

The Minister said the ongoing consultations were intended to keep the market functioning smoothly and safeguard the availability of essential items throughout the season.
