Parliamentary Committee Begins Prison Inspections to Tackle Overcrowding

Members of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on Governance, Justice and Civil Protection have started inspecting prisons as part of efforts to find solutions to overcrowding in correctional facilities.

Committee members visited the Colombo Remand Prison, New Magazine Prison, Welikada Prison and the Prison Hospital yesterday. The inspections are intended to assess prison conditions and identify areas needing improvement.

The review covers kitchen operations, healthcare facilities, the condition of prison buildings, including structures considered unsafe, and the drainage systems used for wastewater disposal. The committee is also looking into the facilities available to prison officers and the challenges they face in carrying out their duties.
