Heat index advisory issued for eight districts

Colombo (LNW): The heat index is continued to be expected to increase up to “Caution” level amidst the high temperature at some places in Kilinochchi, Vavuniya, Mullativu, Mannar, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala, Moneragala and Hambantota Districts, the Department of Meteorology said in an advisory statement today (18).

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in Sabaragamuwa, Western, Central, North-Western and Uva provinces and in Galle and Matara districts during the afternoon or night, and mainly fair weather will prevail elsewhere over the island, the Dept said.

General public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Condition of Rain:
Showers or thunder showers may occur at a few places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo during the night. 
Winds:
Winds will be south-westerly over the sea areas  off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Galle via Mannar and Colombo and it will be south-easterly or variable in direction in rest of the sea areas around the island, wind speed will be (20-30) kmph.   
State of Sea:
Sea areas off the coast extending from Batticaloa to Pottuvil will be moderate. The other sea areas around the island will be slight. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
