Nathasha Edirisooriya Remanded, Bruno Divakara Released on Bail

Date:

Stand-up comedian Nathasha Edirisooriya, known for her controversial remarks insulting multiple religions, has been ordered to remain in custody until July 5. The decision was made after Edirisooriya and Bruno Divakara, the owner of the YouTube channel ‘SL VLOG’ where her viral video was posted, appeared before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court on June 21.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested Divakara on May 31 after an extensive eight-hour interrogation regarding the offensive comments made by Edirisooriya during her stand-up routine. The video in question initially surfaced on the ‘SL VLOG’ YouTube channel, which led to Divakara’s involvement.

In a separate incident, Edirisooriya was apprehended by the CID on May 28 at the Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) while attempting to leave the country. Her remarks at a recent stand-up comedy show held at a prestigious school in Colombo had sparked outrage and resulted in her arrest.

As the legal proceedings continue, Edirisooriya remains in custody while Divakara has been granted bail under certain conditions. The controversy surrounding their actions has stirred intense public debate and drawn attention to the limits of free speech and the consequences of offensive remarks.
