CA halts purchase of 750,000 passports from two companies

September 28, Colombo (LNW): The Court of Appeal has issued an interim injunction preventing the enforcement of a Cabinet decision made by the previous government to purchase 750,000 passports from two private companies. The injunction, effective until October 1, was granted on September 26 after the court considered a writ petition filed by Epic Lanka, challenging the legality of the purchase.

Appeal Court Judge Mohammed Laffar Thaheer presided over the case, with President’s Counsel Viran Corea representing the petitioner. Corea argued that the decision, made on September 2, bypassed the proper procurement process, rendering it unlawful. He requested that the court issue a writ to nullify the decision.

After reviewing the presented facts, the court granted the interim injunction. Among the respondents named in the case were the former Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles, the Secretary of the Ministry, and several others.
