National Green Front condemns UK sanctions on Sri Lankan military leaders

Date:

March 29, Colombo (LNW): The National Green Front (NGF) has strongly criticised the United Kingdom’s recent decision to impose sanctions on former Sri Lankan military, Navy, and Air Force commanders, labelling them as unjust and politically motivated.

In a statement addressed to media organisations, NGF General Secretary Tharuka Ranaweera emphasised that these commanders are recognised as war heroes by the Sri Lankan people.

He argued that the UK’s actions disregard the sacrifices made by the armed forces in ensuring national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The party maintains that the move fails to consider the realities of Sri Lanka’s decades-long conflict, which ended in 2009, and its subsequent efforts to rebuild and reconcile.

The NGF has urged the Sri Lankan government to adopt a firm diplomatic stance against the sanctions and called upon the international community to engage in fair assessments of the country’s post-war reconciliation process.

In a separate statement addressed to the UK High Commission, the party highlighted the historical and geopolitical context of Sri Lanka’s conflict, accusing Britain of maintaining a colonial-era perspective.

It also condemned the UK for allegedly harbouring remnants of the LTTE’s financial networks and for interfering in Sri Lanka’s internal affairs.

As Sri Lanka continues its recovery from economic turmoil, the NGF insists that past conflicts should not overshadow progress. The party reaffirmed its commitment to defending national sovereignty and ensuring that the contributions of the armed forces are not undermined by external pressures.
