Former CBSL Governor barred from travelling abroad until trial’s conclusion

Date:

The Fort Magistrate Court has imposed a travel ban to former Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Ajith Nivard Cabraal, effective until the conclusion of a trial based on a lawsuit filed by Ven. Theeniyawela Palitha Thero alleging that public funds were misappropriated during his term as the CBSL Governor.

Accordingly, Cabraal has been ordered to appear in Court on June 07, 2022.

The lawsuit alleges that Cabraal committed criminal breach of trust and criminal misconduct by paying off US$ 6.5 million to a US National named Imaad Shah Suberi without the approval of the Cabinet during his tenure as the CBSL Governor from 2006 to 2015.

Wijayadasa Rajapaksa PC is appearing for the plaintiff.
