I turn independent only if Sajith denies Premiership: Harin

Date:

A very unfortunate situation will arise in the country should it continue to move forward in the absence of a prime minister and therefore, the leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), the main Opposition Party in Sri Lanka, Sajith Premadasa should assume the post and form a new government, SJB MP Harin Fernando said, responding to queries regarding his speculated decision to turn independent in Parliament.

Further commenting, the SJB MP pointed out that his remarks regarding the decision to turn independent have wrongly been interpreted on media, revealing that he has no intention of receiving any titles or benefits by plugging himself to a future government via his decision.

Therefore, every issue must be set aside for the people and Mr. Premadasa should be sworn in as the Prime Minister, Fernando went on, adding that he will act independently should the SJB not come forward to form a new government.

The SJB MP further noted that politicians can no longer stand aside in the absence of funds required to fill the needs of the country next week, adding that at least Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), should come forward for the Premiership should Premadasa choose not to. Fernando went on saying that otherwise he will act independently from the SJB and contribute at his capacity to a future government.

Meanwhile, political sources claim that Leader of the United National Party (UNP) Ranil Wickremesinghe is due to be sworn in as the Prime Minister this evening and that over 20 SJB MPs are prepared to endorse the move.
