Date:

Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Finance has decided to exempt essential food items and medicines from all taxes.

This was approved at the Cabinet meeting held yesterday (03) and it is stated that this will be implemented from midnight yesterday.

This tax relief has been provided to alleviate the economic pressure on the people in the face of rising commodity prices in the country.

Explaining this, Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa said that in order to protect local producers when necessary, the imposition of taxes on certain imported goods (for example, the harvest season) has been handed over to the respective Ministries.
