Dinesh Weerakkody denies rumours on being appointed as CBSL Chief

Date:

Dinesh Weerakkody, a renowned economist and business analyst, said the rumours on him being considered for the post of Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) are completely false.

Speaking to LNW, the former Chairman of Commercial Bank, Bank of Ceylon and HNB emphasised that he is not aware of such a move and neither has he asked to be appointed in such a post.

‘Whatever I am doing now for the Prime Minister is purely voluntary and to help the country, given that we are facing the worse economic crisis [in Sri Lanka] since independence. So, please do not speculate and create rifts,’ Weerakkody told LNW.

It was previously reported to us that Prime Minister Wickremesinghe had appointed Weerakkody as his advisor on treasury affairs, a position that is considered an ‘honourary service’ or without any pay or allowance.

The position is said to have been vested in based on Weerakkody’s vast experience in the financial sector as a former Chairman of several Banks and as a member of the Board of Directors of several leading private companies. He is enrolled to coordinate with the CBSL, commercial banks and relevant sections responding to the Treasury.
