Ruling Party says ex President Rajapaksa will soon arrive in SL

Date:

Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will arrive in Sri Lanka within the next few days, said Secretary General of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Sagara Kariyawasam, speaking to a briefing held in the Party Headquarters today (29).

Pointing out that the ex President left the country in not a beautiful environment, Kariyawasam stressed that the government has the responsibility to create a good one for him to return to Sri Lanka.

As a former President of Sri Lanka, Mr. Rajapaksa has the right to receive protection and facilities entitled to a former President, and such facilities, accordingly, have already been prepared, he added.

Rajapaksa fled the nation amidst growing objections and protests from the public and stayed in Maldives, then Singapore and later, Thailand. He confirmed his resignation during his stay in Singapore and currently stays in Thailand guarded by security.

Despite early reports on him returning to the island on August 24, his return was delayed by about two weeks.
