Weerawansa’s illicit assets case dragged in till June

Date:

The hearing of the case filed against Wimal Weerawansa over the allegation of earning illicit assets amounting to about Rs. 75,000,000 beyond his legitimate earnings as a Minister during 2010 – 2014 has been adjourned till June 17, the Colombo High Court ordered.

This was when the case was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Navaratna Marasinghe today (02).

Given that Jayantha Weerasinghe PC, who is appearing for the defendant on this case, was absent at the hearing due to being ill, Weerawansa’s junior lawyer requested the Court that the case be heard on another day.

Accordingly, the Bench ordered the case to be heard on June 17 and 28 and summoned the witnesses to appear before Court on the declared dates.

Weerawansa was indicted in this case in January, 2018 and the case has been pending for more than four years since then.
