Legal actions will be taken against those who expose “isolated incidents” at Buddhist temples: Ministerial Secretary

Date:

Colombo (LNW): Legal actions may have to be taken against anyone who exposes “isolated incidents” at Buddhist temples on Social Media, in prevention of the occurrence of unnecessary social unrest, said Secretary to the Ministry of Buddha Shasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Somaratna Vidanapathirana.

The Police were informed about the recent incident in Nawagamuwa, Bomiriya area and the suspects were arrested immediately, he added.

Acknowledging that assaulting the Buddhist monk and the two women was wrong, the Ministerial Secretary stressed that people should be more careful in exposing such events on Social Media.

A decision on the monk in question should be taken by the Chief Prelates and the Buddha Shasana Ministry, therefore, cannot make any interference on this matter, Vidanapathirana added.
