Sagala Ratnayaka appointed as UNP National Organiser – Clashes recur in Party?

Date:

Leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to appoint former Minister Sagala Ratnayake as the Party National Organiser.

The UNP Leader’s proposition has been approved by the Party Management Committee and probably will be approved by the Working Committee in the upcoming Working Committee meeting as well, said Party Secretary Palitha Range Bandara.

Ratnayake currently serves as a Senior Vice Chairman of the Party. The post of National Organiser remained vacant for over a year in the UNP following Naveen Dissanayake’s resignation.

Wickremesinghe had claimed that the Party’s Leadership would be given to the youth and Ruwan Wijewardena was appointed as the Deputy Leader of the UNP thereafter.

Wickremesinghe, nevertheless, continues to serve as its Leader and refuses to step down from the throne.

In the backdrop, members of the second and third tier leadership have begun to raise criticism against Wickremesinghe’s actions, but the UNP Leader manages to keep everything under control.

Meanwhile, at a recent Working Committee meeting, Anuradhapura District UNP Leader Kasthuri Anuradhanayake criticised the current situation of the Party Leadership and alleged that current Deputy Leader Wijewardena was not receiving adequate support from the seniors for the Party’s reorganisation. It was later reported that Anuradhanayake’s membership in the Working Committee was suspended at the discretion of Wickremesinghe.
