Today’s (Dec 05) weather: Showers, misty conditions expected

Colombo (LNW): The Severe Cyclonic Storm “MICHAUNG” over West-Central Bay of Bengal was located near latitude 14.5°N and longitude 80.3°E, at 2330hrs of 04 December, about 520km North of Jaffna, and is likely to move northwards and cross South Andhra Pradesh coasts around 1130hrs today, December 05, 2023, the Department of Meteorology said in its daily weather forecast today (05).

Several spells of showers can be expected in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North-western and Northern provinces, and showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 01.00 p.m, the statement added.

Misty Condition can be expected in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern Central and Uva provinces during the morning.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Marine Weather:

The Severe Cyclonic Storm “MICHAUNG” over West-Central Bay of Bengal was located near latitude 14.5°N and longitude 80.3°E, at 2330hrs of 04 December, about 520km North of Jaffna. The system is likely to move northwards and cross South Andhra Pradesh coasts around 1130hrs today, December 05, 2023. Hence, the effect on the weather in the sea areas around the island by the severe cyclonic storm “MIGJAUM” is gradually decreasing.
Condition of Rain:
Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Mannar, Colombo and Galle. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island particularly during the evening or night.
Winds:
Winds will be South-westerly and wind speed will be (30-40) kmph in the sea areas around the island. Wind speed may increase up to (45-50) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai and from Hambanthota to Pottuvil.
State of Sea:
The sea areas off the coast extending from  Chilaw to Trincomalee via Mannar and Kankasanthurai and from Hambanthota to Pottuvil can be rough at times. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
