Fairly heavy showers above 75 mm expected in several provinces today (Dec 12)

Colombo (LNW): Showers will occur at times in Eastern Uva and North-central provinces and in Nuwara Eliya district, and several spells of showers may occur in Northern province and in Hambantota district, the Department of Meteorology said in its daily weather forecast today (12).

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the other areas of the island after 1.00 p.m, and fairly heavy showers above 75mm are likely at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, Eastern and Western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts, the statement added.

Misty condition can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern and Uva provinces in the morning.

The public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Condition of Rain:
Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Pottuvil to Kankasanthurai via Batticaloa and Trincomalee. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in the other sea areas around the island particularly during the evening or night.
Winds:
Winds will be North-easterly in direction and wind speed will be (25-35) kmph. Wind speed may increase up to (40-45) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee.
State of Sea:
The sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Kankasanthurai and Trincomalee can be fairly rough at times. The other sea areas around the island will be slight to moderate. Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
