Police constable suspended over alleged cannabis planting incident

July 28, Colombo (LNW): A Police constable has reportedly been suspended following allegations of attempting to plant cannabis in a vehicle during a traffic stop in Kollupitiya.

The constable reportedly stopped a car from the Grandpass area, with several men inside, and allegedly tried to place cannabis in the vehicle.

A video of the incident, recorded on a mobile phone and spread widely on social media, led to a police investigation.

The footage reveals that the passengers are accusing the officer of trying to extort money by planting the cannabis.

The constable was suspended after an inquiry, which also revealed he was chewing betel while in uniform and conducted the search improperly without the presence of the driver or passengers, a report by Lankadeepa revealed.

Kollupitiya Police are continuing their investigation into the matter.
