Sri Lanka triumphs in Women’s Asia Cup with victory over India

Date:

July 29, Colombo (LNW): Sri Lanka clinched their first Women’s Asia Cup title on Sunday, triumphing over India with a decisive run-chase before home fans.

This marked only the second occasion in nine final appearances that India did not secure the Women’s Asia Cup, the previous instance being in 2018 when Bangladesh defeated India by three wickets.

Samarawickrama was named Player of the Match in the final, while Chamari Athapaththu earned Player of the Tournament honours for her impressive 304 runs and three wickets during the competition.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe congratulated Athapaththu over the phone, in what observers described as an emotional reception to the Sri Lanka Women’s Cricket team.
