Election Commission prepares for potential weather-related disruptions during Presidential Polls

Date:

September 19, Colombo (LNW): The Election Commission has announced comprehensive preparations to handle any disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions during the upcoming presidential election.

Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Rathnayake emphasised that particular focus has been placed on districts prone to disaster or emergencies, ensuring that they are adequately equipped to respond to potential challenges.

To enhance preparedness, the Commission will receive regular weather updates from the Meteorological Department, starting on the 20th, with reports scheduled every three hours.

This frequent monitoring aims to provide timely information to help mitigate any weather-related impacts on the electoral process.

In a collaborative effort, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) and the Election Commission have devised a joint programme to address potential natural disasters that may affect the election proceedings.

Pradeep Kodippili, Director of the Disaster Management Centre, confirmed that this programme would be in place from today until 22 September.

The initiative involves coordinated actions and resource mobilisation to manage unexpected disruptions, ensuring that polling stations and the electoral process remain functional in the face of adverse conditions.
