NPP Secures Two-Thirds Majority in Sri Lanka’s 2024 General Election

Date:

The National People’s Power (NPP) has achieved a significant victory in the 2024 General Election, securing a two-thirds majority in Parliament with a total of 123 seats. This achievement confirms NPP’s dominance in the House, surpassing the required 113 seats for a majority.

  • NPP in Gampaha District:
    • NPP won 16 out of 19 seats in the Gampaha District, polling 898,759 votes (72%).
    • Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) secured 150,445 votes (12.18%), winning 3 seats.

With the total vote count standing at 6,842,223 votes (61.73%), NPP is poised to take control of the country’s legislative agenda. This victory sets the stage for NPP leader and newly elected President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to push forward his reforms aimed at combatting corruption and stabilizing the economy after Sri Lanka’s severe economic crisis.

In a remarkable shift, Dissanayake’s party, which was previously part of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) with only 3 seats in the dissolved parliament, now holds substantial power in the new legislative framework.
