General Secretary of National Economic Council Sri Lanka Professor Lalith Samarakoon says that measures have already been taken in paying the total loan instalment of 1,500 Million US Dollars for 2019.
He mentioned that the balance of 650 Million US Dollars of the Hambantota port project can be of use for the necessity, adding that 1000 Million US Dollars from Bank of Ceylon, People's Bank and the National Savings Bank and another 500 from investments in Sri Lanka development bonds and China Development Bank will also be retrieved for the use.
1000 Million US Dollars are required to be paid for the loans instalments by January, 2019, and the 500 rest on the coming April.
He reasoned that Sri Lanka is not depressed over paying foreign debts, adding that fiscal policy and discipline can be properly maintained.
Professor Samarakoon emphasized that there is a sum of 7.2 Billion US Dollars in the Sri Lankan treasury and that none shall be worried as into what capacity Sri Lanka can reach for paying the foreign debts.
He made these comments in attending to the press conference held in regard to announcing the Cabinet decisions yesterday (22).
