The majority is with the UNP after the president’s instruction that either that party or the UPFA shows a parliamentary majority and form a new government.
He has agreed to a suggestion that the UNP will be joined by 10 SLFP members. This is the result of discussions the two sides had last night (14). Accordingly, the UNP will declare its decision tomorrow, say political sources.
Meanwhile, Thilanga Sumathipala and Dayasiri Jayasekara are trying to unite the UPFA with the joint opposition to form a government.
A UNP senior said that Ranil Wickremesinghe is capable of winning a majority support in parliament although the SLFP members in the government are against him. He said Wickremesinghe needed not step down. The UNP can obtain support of the TNA too, he said, adding that parliament will not agree for a Mahinda faction figure as the PM.
Meanwhile, the SLFP has summoned all its electoral organizers for a meeting in Colombo today (15) following a directive by the president to discuss the LG polls results. UPFA, SLFP and allied party winners at the election will also be present.
