The CID has received yet another piece of strong evidence against Brig. Deshapriya Gunawardena, who is remanded in connection with the shooting that targeted unarmed people of Rathupaswala who protested demanding safe drinking water.
A colonel who had been with Gunawardena at the time of the incident gave a statement to the CID to the effect that the brigadier had been on the phone with the then defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who had wanted to know what was happening at the protest.
CID sources say that there is much evidence against both Gotabhaya and Gunawardena, although both claim innocence. Gunawardena has been maintaining that he had gone to another place to charge his mobile phone. However, the colonel’s statement proves that to be false.
