However now that the path to Nibbana has been rediscovered (see www.buddgaintelligence.org) these three aspects of Buddhism are proven to be not the path to Nibbana.
The Buddha message is not to control mind, but to get rid of this magician altogether. Controlling and developing the mind such as Meditation (although it produces temporary benefits like calmness) is actually equal to enhancing the illusive activity of the mind. This becomes an obstacle to relinquish the mind altogether later in the path to Nibbana. Therefore those who develop the mind through meditation or in fact Daana and Seela will find it difficult to do away with the mind because it has been trained to come to the fore front (mano pubbangama) all the time. Buddha clearly stated to the five hermits (whom he met immediately after attaining Buddhahood –according to history) that they will not become enlightened via this path. This is found in the very first sermon he gave - Dhamma Chakka Pavaththana Sutra.
He stated that what he is about to say is “not what they have heard before” (pubbe ananussuthesu dhammesu). What five hermits knew very well and actually practised were these three Giving, Observing precepts and Meditation and of course a way of life begging for food from others.
Buddha clearly dismissed this way of life for attaining Nibbana, not once but twelve times in this sutra.
These three activities, along with begging for food as a way of life are the hallmarks of Hindu and Jain philosophy. Somehow about 2100 years ago this form of way of life which Buddha rejected has crept into what is known as Buddhism and since then there has been no enlightened ones recorded in the history.
To day especially Sri-Lankan people and in fact many people all over the world have been taken for a ride in creating an impression giving food, money, land, and luxury vehicles will lead to Nibbana. In Rathana Sutra Buddha clearly states that Nibbana is reached not through donations of money (laddha mudha nibbuthing bhunjamana).
Most Buddhists in Sri-Lanka and Sri-Lankans living abroad do not know that with impermanence there can not be fruition of a deed that happened before. In impermanence what arises disappears immediately and the next that arises will have no connection with the previous. In this system nothing can be collected and stored for fruition at a later date. What disappears is total and absolute with out remains. There is no residue left (asesa nirodho). Therefore in this universe nothing remains to produce an effect on a later occasion.
In current Buddhism there is this notion of storing information and results of it obtaining on a later occasion. This is completely opposite to what Buddha has stated about impermanence.
Although by “thinking using the mind” one feels it is fair that there should be such a system somewhere which produces results from deeds before, unfortunately there is no such system available in the universe. There is nothing we can do about it. Certainly there is no point in assuming the presence of such a system when in fact such a system is non-existent.
In fact during the first stage of enlightenment what is seen is impermanence, that there is no such system in the universe to automatically store information. This is the actual “The way it is” in Buddha and Dhamma. This will be seen by the eye of Panna during stream entry (first stage of enlightenment).
Giving people to those who do not have is a good thing in society. But giving to people who have serves no purpose. In both instances it will not lead to Nibbana. Expecting to receive 1000 times more than what was given is utterly foolish and is a disgrace to pure Buddha message which states that there is no person called “me” or “I” in this body to give or receive.
Giving, Observing precepts, Meditation and Begging for food are things done by a “person” called “me” or “I” to control “me” or “I”, is therefore NOT the Buddha word. In fact he clearly rejected that in his very first sermon not once but twelve times reminding the five hermits minute by minute.
In the next article I will discuss the reason why Buddha rejected these three so called fundamentals of result less Buddhism.
