A Bulgarian journalist who had been reporting on alleged corruption involving European Union funds has been raped and murdered, authorities said on Sunday.
The body of 30-year-old Viktoria Marinova has been found in a park in Ruse, near the border of Romania.
She had worked for TVN, a Ruse-based TV station, as a reporter. She had interviewed investigative journalists about alleged corruption involving EU funds linked to politicians and businessmen.
Bulgarian Interior Minister of Bulgaria Mladen Marinov had stated that there was no evidence to suggest that the murder was connected with her journalistic work.
Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov had stated that the best criminologists were sent to Ruse to investigate Viktoria’s murder.
Marinova is the third journalist to have been murdered in the EU in a year.
