Following the government announcement that it expected to hold local government elections in January, main parties are now in the process of choosing their candidates. At the LG polls, the Colombo municipal council will feature prominently, and the parties are to field their strongest candidates for the CMC.
Ex-MP Rosie Senanayake is to be given candidature from the UNP, while the SLFP candidate is said to be former minister Ferial Ashroff. Also, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna is to field ex-defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa as the mayoral candidate, following many requests. However, he is reluctant to contest, as he is not confident of victory in this stronghold of the UNP. Another thing to his disadvantage is that the majority population of the municipality comprises the minorities.
Gotabhaya says Omar Kamil, once considered to be the SLPP’s candidate, is more suited to contest. That could be his proposal to escape from certain defeat. However, Rajapaksa loyalists are adamant that he should contest, saying Kamil is pro-UNP and that will come as a disadvantage for them.
