Ministers Susil Premajayantha and John Seneviratne met ex-president Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning (22) and conveyed a message from president Maithripala Sirisena, reports say. Their mission is to lay the foundation at any cost to see that the SLFP and the joint opposition unite to contest the upcoming election.
The Sunday Times quoted president Sirisena as questioning as to how he could negotiate with Mahinda while wearing a sarong. Siri Ranasinghe got that translated and published it in Monday’s Lankadeepa. The following day, the president telephoned Ranasinghe and said he did not say such a thing. We are wondering whom to believe. This is an indication that the president has taken a sudden liking for the JO.
Meanwhile, election monitors say a postponement of the local government election is unavoidable after the court of appeal today (22) issued a stay order preventing the implementation of the gazette notification on the delimitation of LG bodies till December 04. Previously, the chairman of the elections commission said the announcement calling for nominations would be issued on November 27. Now, that has to be put off. Therefore, whatever the local government minister says, a postponement of the election is unavoidable.
